In a previous article I talked about using Kiva and ModestNeeds as the basis for a conversation class. The idea was to allow the students to practice conversation while learning about micro-credit. I use a similar class to introduce students to Pennies For Peace.

Give each student in your class one penny. Ask your students what they can do with one penny. What could they do if each student asked five people for a penny every day for a month? Would the total amount that the class collected be useful?

Show them the Pennies For Peace website.

"The Pennies for Peace program is designed to help students broaden their cultural horizons and learn about their capacities as philanthropists. It educates students about the world beyond their experience and shows them that they can make a positive impact on a global scale, one penny at a time. Students learn the rewards of sharing and working together to bring hope and education opportunities to the children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. While a penny is virtually worthless, in impoverished countries a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy." - www.penniesforpeace.org/about-the-program/

This lesson idea not only gives your students the opportunity to practice conversation but provides an opening for many other topics. Students can discuss charity programs that are popular in their countries, areas in need in their countries, what a penny is worth in their countries, etc.

There is an old saying, "A penny for your thoughts." Depending on the thought or idea, that penny can be the start to something very important.
