'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' opens at Covedale Center for the Performing Arts this Thursday, October 29, 2009 and runs through November 15, 2009.
Ken Kesey is to thank for being the original writer of the novel of the same name. Miloš Forman directed the 1975 Jack Nicholson movie. The movie was one of only a handful of movies to win all 5 major Oscars (Best Picture, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Director, and Screenplay). Because of this and because of its social impact and message, it is considered to be one of the greatest American films of all time.
Randle Patrick McMurphy, Jack Nicholson’s character, is a repeat offender serving a sentence on a prison farm for statutory rape when he is sent to a mental institution. His intent in going there was to avoid hard labor and find a more peaceful environment. Instead, he awakens to a humiliating environment that is numbed and terrified into quiet submission. Randle pushes the limits and brings new life to the patients. But unless you already know the story, you will never guess what comes next when those in charge try to regain their control.
