The Asus Eee 1000HE offers an excellent balance of small size and power

Netbooks have become increasingly popular, in part because of their extreme portability, low price and outstanding value. Unlike full size laptops, they are not a good substitute for a desktop machine – their screens are too small, the keyboards uncomfortable for use over long periods, their performance is considerably slower and they lack internal DVDs.

That said, if you are looking for extreme portability, they can be an excellent choice.

The Asus Eee 1000HE Netbook, weighing in at 3 pounds 3 ounces, is a stunning piece of engineering. Though slightly larger than other machines (such as the 1002HA that has a slower processor and smaller battery to go with the thinner profile), the slight increase in size buys you a battery rated at over 9 hours (that will reliably deliver more than 7 hours of actual use). The Asus 1000HE also uses the newer Intel N280 Atom processor instead of the N270 used by most current machines.

The Asus Eee 1000HE features the following:

  • 1GB of RAM (which you can and should upgrade to 2GB)
  • 1024x600 native display (supports 1024x768 compressed or scrolled, and with external video)
  • Bluetooth support
  • Wired (RG-45 10/100) and Wireless Internet (802.11 b/g/n)
  • 160GB hard drive
  • 1.3 MP camera
  • Speaker and microphone
  • SD, SDHC and MMC memory slot
  • VGA port
  • 3x USB 2.0 ports
  • Elantech multi-touch touchpad
  • Kensington lock port
  • StarOffice, WinDVD and Skype come pre-installed
