The Memphis - via my Palm
The Memphis - via my Palm
Kelly Stoddard

As readers know, I love sandwiches! Very few meals are as cheap or filling and include several food groups that can be eaten on the go. In the realm of sandwiches, one of my favorites is the pressed sandwich. From cubans to paninis to new-fangled grilled cheese, the crust of the toasted bread paired with molten cheese just does it for me. Which is why it’s surprising that it took me this long to get over to Swich, the somewhat trendy, pressed sandwich shop in Chelsea.

Typically, these sort of concept places are a more style than substance and over-priced. With nothing on the menu over $9 and the enticing smell of melted cheese in the air, I couldn’t resist. Luckily, Swich is not all concept and delivers the gooey, crunchy goodness you would expect from a pressed sandwich shop. A focus on fresh, local ingredients and green farming created a menu was surprisingly extensive, covering everything from Grecian inspired lamb paninis with taziki sauce to a vegetarian delight with portabella mushrooms and herbed goat cheese.

With all the variety, it’s hard to pick just one but a sandwich inspired by Elvis’ rumored favorite lunch called to me. The aptly named “Memphis” consists of peanut butter, sliced bananas and honey nestled in golden raisin semolina bread. It was everything you would expect a pressed peanut butter, Elvis inspired sandwich to be: decadent, delicious, guilt-inducing yumminess. With the glass of water I needed to wash it down, my meal was less than $7.
