Cream Puff by gideon

Fans of the chain Beard Papa have a new cream puff vendor to check out since Pacific Puffs opened along Union Street a couple of weeks ago. Early reports indicate that the owners, who bake off-site, are selling out of cream puffs almost every day. Pacific Puffs offers coffee, tea, milk and water to accompany their treats.

Currently, Pacific Puffs offers six varieties of cream puffs. Classic varieties are served with a pastry cream-whipped cream mixture and can be sprinkled with sugar or topped with chocolate glaze. "Fruit whip" puffs are, as indicated by the un-elegant name, a combination of whipped cream and seasonal fruit. Chocolatier puffs feature chocolate whipped cream, again, with chocolate glaze or sugar on top. The choux paste--an eggy dough which forms the base of the puff--is baked fresh daily to ensure a crisp exterior shell. The filling is piped in deliciously excessive quantities and is smooth and creamy.

For those looking to compare Pacific Puffs to Beard Papa, the chocolate glaze on top of the cream puffs is fluffier; more like an icing or glaze than a chocolate shell. The choux paste is quite buttery and richer than Beard Papa's, and the fillings can be creamier. Pacific Puffs sell for $3-$3.25 a puff, or $36 per mixed dozen.

Pacific Puffs is a collaborate between two brothers (and one spouse), who baked cream puffs growing up and continue to use their childhood recipe. The store is still working through some opening kinks--no doubt they're looking for a way to streamline things a bit due to an opening boom--but it's certainly worth putting on the radar next time you're shopping near the Marina.
