What do we really know about Michael Jackson's childhood?
After Michael's death many clips were shown on the news of a past interview with him. The interviewer asks him about his earlier years as a child star. He tells the interviewer that he did not have a normal childhood. During the day he went to school and after school his time was spent in a recording studio. All the while his father would belittle and berate him. The interviewer asks if he was beaten by his father and Michael hesitates and then says yes. He says if you want to understand him read the lyrics to his song "Childhood".
Childhood lyrics
Have you seen my Childhood?
I'm searching for the world that I come from
'Cause I've been looking around
In the lost and found of my heart...
No one understands me
They view it as such strange eccentricities...
'Cause I keep kidding around
Like a child, but pardon me...
People say I'm not okay
'Cause I love such elementary things...
It's been my fate to compensate,
for the Childhood
I've never known...
Have you seen my Childhood?
I'm searching for that wonder in my youth
Like pirates in adventurous dreams,
Of conquest and kings on the throne...
Before you judge me, try hard to love me,
Look within your heart then ask,
Have you seen my Childhood?
People say I'm strange that way
'Cause I love such elementary things,
It's been my fate to compensate,
for the Childhood I've never known...
Have you seen my Childhood?
I'm searching for that wonder in my youth
Like fantastical stories to share
The dreams I would dare, watch me fly...
Before you judge me, try hard to love me.
The painful youth I've had
Have you seen my Childhood...
Was it Michael Jackson's lack of a childhood that lead to his bizarre behaviors? Was it the media spreading rumors about him that lead to drug abuse and his untimely death? Some suggest that the facial surgery might have been a form of self mutilation. It's all speculation, we will never know what the truth is or was.
It seems like he tried to let us into his world and into his mind a number of times through his music and some past interviews. Perhaps it was all just over our heads and we simply could not relate to what he went through in his life. Whatever the case, we cannot deny the legacy he has left behind, his music is a gift that will live on forever. The world took Michael Jackson for granted and now that he's gone we see how important Michael Jackson really was. Many people around the world lost an irreplaceable idol on June 25, 2009. Hopefully he somehow knows how much he meant to us and how sorely he will be missed by all.
