Most dogs love food. Not all dogs, but most dogs. Thanksgiving being one of those holidays that is hand in hand with a huge dinner and our dogs being part of the family the food issue can become and detrimental if your dog gets a hold of the wrong treat.
As a dog owner there are those things that come as second nature that shouldn’t be given to the dog. For example chocolate. The unfortunate thing is there are a few other very common things included in both Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday feasts that can be a serious health problem for your dog should it be ingested.
The Big Hazards to Dogs on Thanksgiving Include (not limited to!):
Sage can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression to pets if eaten in large quantities.
Turkey skin can cause canine pancreatitis. This causes severe diarrhea and vomiting which can lead to dehydration. Other symptoms include: refusal to eat, weakness, whining, and irritability.
Bread dough can expand in the stomache of your dog and cause bloat.
These are three foods that are not commonly known by dog owners as a hazard to health but can be a detrimental mistake if your dog gets too much of any of these things.
Other Tips:
Secure the garbage - especially when the scraps from dinner bones included end up there.
Have identification tags on your dog.
Have a dog safe room, kennel or crate for your dog to hang out in while your guest arrive and depart particularly. Read Thanksgiving Dog Safety Tips for more on the best places in the house for your dog in consideration of guests and dinner time.
The list of what you shouldn’t give to your dog is important to know. With that though things you can give to the dog is always good to add to the list. A few pieces of turkey without the skin is a great treat for your dog given with the normal meal your dog eats. Added to a quality wholesome dog food your dog will be wagging profusely.
The Holiday Kong Treat is a fun thing to give your dog as well and can be used as entertainment while getting a little chill time in a dog safe room, crate or kennel.
Holiday Kong Treat preparation: Stuff a few pieces of your dog’s regular kibble, cubed pieces of turkey (with NO skin!), a couple of chopped up green beans, a few cubed pieces of sweet potato and dribble some gravy on it all and your dog will be beyond the wagging thankful state!
