People experience stress in many different ways and for many different reasons. For some, clutter is definitely on top of the stress list. Stress occurs in thinking ahead or looking back. Clutter and disorganization keep you out of the moment and put you either into the future or back into the past. There’s no stress in the moment. Think about it. When we’re in the future we’re thinking about something we need to do or something that might happen. When we’re in the past we’re "shoulding" on ourselves for something that didn’t get done or didn’t get done right. In the past we’re thinking about what we could’ve been, should’ve been or how it use to be. We don’t have any power over the past or the future. We have this moment to live this life. Sure we have to reflect back to change but glance, don’t stare. We need to look ahead to see where we’re going but we need only look briefly. When we remain tied to the past or future we miss our life – this only continues the cycle of "shoulding". So now what? There’s a simple and, to some, radical solution to clutter stress relief. Let it go. Sometimes you have to be willing to give something away to get something back. Sometimes you have to be willing to let something go to make room for the amazing gifts life has to offer. Society has put so much meaning and status into possessions that "to have" somehow makes you "someone". You are someone regardless of what you have? You are someone just because you are? What if you cleared a space in your kitchen, office, bedroom or family room to allow all of the amazing things you want to come in? What if you have to let go in order to get something even more amazing? Would you? Can you trust that something fabulous will fill the space you have cleared up?
