Kelly Clarkson's new Self magazine cover is raising eyebrows because it was obviously photoshopped to slim down the ex-American Idol winner. Clarkson, 27, clearly appears thinner than she really is (see the real Kelly below) on the Sept. Self cover.
While photoshopping is hardly a capital offense, Self is under fire for sending out mixed messages with its heavy-handed photo editing. Ironically, Kelly appears in the health magazine's Total Body Confidence issue.
It's no secret that magazines routinely photoshop models, both on their covers and inside the publications themselves, but in the Sept. interview, Clarkson claims she's very happy with her weight.
Says Kelly: "When people talk about my weight, I'm like, 'You seem to have a problem with it; I don't...I'm fine! I've never felt uncomfortable on the red carpet or anything." If Clarkson supposedly accepts her weight and appearance as-is, then why did Self feel the need to edit 10-20 lbs. off Clarkson on its cover?
In a statement, Self insisted, Kelly Clarkson exudes confidence, and is a great role model for women of all sizes and stages of their life. She works out and is strong and healthy, and our picture shows her confidence and beauty.
Meanwhile, Clarkson has started working out to the CrossFit cardio and strength training program. "I love it! It's like boot camp," she says. "You never work out more than 35 minutes, but it's so intense. You do things like box jumps, then 50 sit-ups, then 50 squats and then running."
She adds: "It's very empowering. I feel like I can whup a**! And in my shows, everybody has noticed. They're like, 'Dude, you have 100% more energy!'"
