Harry Potter starlet Emma Watson has a lot on her plate. Watson will be attending Brown University in Providence, R.I., this fall, and has a new film coming out: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, co-starring Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.
Watson, 19, became an overnight sensation in 2001 when she was cast as Hermione Granger in the blockbuster Harry Potter film series. Since then, the British cutie has co-starred in five of the mega-franchise's hit films.
Despite the pitfalls that have plagued many a child star (e.g., Michael Jackson), Emma appears to have escaped relatively unscathed from the pressures of fame and fortune. And in the face of the intense pressure that actresses often feel to be stick-thin, Emma seems to possess a healthy body image.
'I don't diet'
"It's just not something that I aspire to, to be super-skinny," Watson told Grazia magazine. "It's not inspirational at all for me. I'm lucky that I'm this size naturally. I don't diet...I love chocolate and pasta and I love baking. I make a great raspberry amaretto cake."
Emma loves sports
"For some reason, girls seem to think it [being athletic] is unfeminine and they worry about being 'pretty'," says Watson. "But I feel the most pretty when I come off the pitch after a field hockey game and I've got pink cheeks and bright eyes. Sport really makes me feel good about myself."
Focus on health
While Emma concedes she's lucky to be naturally thin, she understands how young women can fall victim to eating disorders and body dysmorphia. "There is so much pressure on girls our age to be smart and pretty and funny and skinny - they have to be everything," says Watson. "I definitely know what that pressure is like, but my philosophy is to eat what you like and be healthy and exercise."
Say no to drugs
When you're a star in young Hollywood, drugs are ridiculously easy to come by, but they just don't appeal to Emma. "I'd be too frightened to take drugs," she says. "I have enough in my life without looking for something else, and I hope that will always be the case."
Twilight hunk raves about her
Meanwhile, Watson and her fellow Harry Potter co-stars have earned high praise from Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson for handling early stardom so well. Rob, 23, had co-starred with Emma, Daniel Radcliffe, 19, and Rupert Grint, 20, in the 2005 blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
"I think the way the kids from Harry Potter are dealing with fame is by ignoring everything and just living their normal lives as much as they can," said Pattinson. "That has really worked for them. They’re all very sane."
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens in theaters July 17.
