Cancer is tough enough. Reading about all the research on yoga benefits to cancer patients is even harder when you can't shell out the hundred (or sometimes hundreds) of dollars to pay for a studio membership.
Enter Yoga Bear. Non-profit Yoga Bear was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to providing cancer survivors with opportunities for wellness and healing through hte practice of yoga.
With chapters all over the nation and recent chapter additions in Austin, Texas, the group is growing.
"We are looking to expand the chapter into San Antonio and Dallas," says Outreach Director, Holly Krenek.
"We work with yoga studios who provide at least 10 class passes as a minimum, or as many as they want beyond that for free, and then we match survivors who are out of treatment with the best studio for them," Krenek says.
Krenek says that each participant in Yoga Bear's yoga for cancer survivors needs to feel comfortable in the studio and with the classes they are taking. Some studios have even offered survivor participants an additional pass for a family member, friend or spouse.
