#1: Solar Energy

“We’re trying to lay a foundation for a new economy…We are investing not in digging more oil wells but in building more wind farms, investing in solar energy….We are going to have an economy that [is] not based on a bubble.” (Media Teleconference, 6/8/09)

This Tuesday, Joe Biden will be traveling to a solar panel manufacturer near Toledo, Ohio to put his money where his mouth is. Willard & Kelsey Solar Group just received $10 Million from the Economic Stimulus Plan to create up to 3,500 new jobs making thin photo-voltaic cells for residential and commercial use.  VP Biden will tour the facility at 10 AM and hold a middle class task force meeting titled "Promoting American Manufacturing in the 21st Century" afterwards. He'll discuss the state of the manufacturing industry, how the administration is supporting manufacturing communities presently and what they have planned for the future.

#2: Father's Day

"My No. 2 son, who's down here, he's a lawyer. He wanted to go to law school... he went to Yale. Now I don't like those Ivy League schools; I went to a state school. But all kidding aside, he went to Yale, he didn't learn anything except how to run a homeless shelter." (South Lawn, 6/19/09)

On the South Lawn of the White House, Joe Biden and Barack Obama appeared with basketball players Alonzo Mourning and Dwayne Wade to discuss the joys of fatherhood. They gave their fatherly advice to a group of Northeast Washington Middle School students on Friday. Biden went on to add, "Think about any time you've been beat in competition. There's an  85% chance the guy who beat you is more confident, more self-assured... They're not smarter than you. They may be better educated, but they're not smarter." (At a boxing match, surely Joe would make a great coach in the corner!) After this heart-warming rambling, Biden joined Obama for a few Father's Day rounds of golf on Sunday.

#3 Rebuilding Michigan

"It's not just about rebuilding roads... it's about rebuilding an economy that can lead us into the 21st Century." (Kalamazoo, 6/12/09)

Last Friday, Joe spoke at a high school in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The city is getting another $2 billion in stimulus money to take care of distressed unemployed workers and rebuild the I-94. According to Lieutenant Governor John Cherry Jr., the project will create 1,200 construction jobs and that the overall projections say federal aid will create 27,000 jobs in the long haul. There's also been a lot of talk about creating a high-speed rail line through Michigan, which is the pet project of Governor Jennifer Granholm.
