MSNBC's Joe Scarborough called Joe Biden "the greatest vice president of our time," but meanwhile, Gallup polls indicate VP Biden is losing favorability among the majority of voters. This week Gallup reported his approval rating at 42%. Earlier this month, Rasmussen polls reported just 46% of those surveyed still liked Biden.
To put this in perspective, Cheney had a 65% approval rating and Gore had a 55% approval rating in their first years. Of course, Cheney had 9/11 on his side and Gore had battled Ross Perot over NAFTA right around polling time. And Joe’s got what – a trip to Ohio to talk about jobs and a trip to Poland to talk about missile defense? La Dee Da.
New York Magazine Columnist Dan Amira suggests, “People only like Joe Biden when he’s making a fool of himself.” It seems Americans miss that sympathetic side of Joe… this newly disciplined character is just not as likable.
A larger reason for the Vice President's growing unpopularity is likely linked with the economic recovery, which has everyone irked. It seems the #2 in command -- who is given the enormous task of implementing the stimulus bill -- is inflating the numbers and painting a rosy portrait, despite rising joblessness. Time and time again, the data undermines his best efforts to sell comfort to the American people and, in the end, it's clearly hurting him... interestingly enough, more than President Obama himself who is ahead of Biden by about 13 points.
Luckily, Biden doesn’t care about the polls any more than the crazy verbiage that comes out of his mouth. It should also be duly noted… he’s still beating Dan Quayle’s 43% first-year approval rating.
