Ravinia featured Pop artists July 2009
July is the heart of the summer season at Ravinia. Pop/rock legends and their classic songs dominate the 2009 season at Ravinia in Highland Park this summer. The July lineup of featured pop artists in July include Femi Kuti, Tom Jones, The Beach Boys, Steve Miller Band, John Legend. Lyle Lovett and Jackson Browne.

Femi Kuti July 1
Ravinia celebrates world music in a big way with the debuts of Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti and his band The Positive Force and King Sunny Ade & His African Beats for a double bill on July 1. Hailing from Nigeria, Kuti, whose father was the Afrobeat pioneer of Fela Kuti, refines his musical heritage mixing Afrobeat with soul and jazz and collaborating with such artists as Mos Def and Common. Ade is the undisputed king of juju music, the dance-inspiring hybrid of western pop and traditional African music with roots in the guitar tradition of Nigeria.
Tom Jones July 11
With his powerful, deep voice and songs such as “It’s Not Unusual,” “Black Betty” and “Sex Bomb,” that make the ladies swoon, pop giant Tom Jones returns to Ravinia on July 11.
The Beach Boys July 14
Steve Miller Band July 17
After two sold-out Ravinia shows in 2007 that were filmed for its first live concert DVD Live From Chicago, the Steve Miller Band returns to the festival on July 17 to perform the group’s biggest hits including “Fly Like An Eagle,” “Jungle Love” and “The Joker.”
John Legend and India Arie July 20 and July 21
Ravinia showcases rhythm and blues artists throughout the summer, including the festival debut of soul singer John Legend, fresh from his appearance at the 81st Academy Awards, on July 21. Grammy-winner Legend has filled the charts with such hits as “Ordinary People,” “Heaven” and “Stay with You.”
