A blog series on Susan Passoni, part three

Another reason I think Susan Passoni will be a great addition to Beacon Hill is her understanding on the importance of education. When I met with her she pointed out how there were 16 universities in the Boston area, why has the city not been taping into this valuable resource?
Passoni is also a big advocate for public education and has experience in the academic sector. She works non-profit for an East Boston Middle School with kids in grades 5-8. Passoni wants to increase the standards of public education in Boston. Many of the students enter the middle school with 2nd and 3rd grade reading levels and low math skills. The school has rigorous and structured programs with high expectations on the students. Last year the 7th graders tested first in the state in English and the 8th graders tested second in the state in math. Despite starting with lower than average skills the students graduate and go to some of the best prep schools in the state.
What Passoni has seen in her work at the school is that individuals do have the ability to make a difference, a difference that can positively influence someone’s life. She would like to take what she has learned here to improve public education across the state. As Passoni pointed out, children are the future engines of our economy and she wants to devote time enhancing the standards of public education.
