Alan Keyes, 21 others arrested while protesting Obama’s Notre Dame speech
Alan Keyes and 21 others were arrested today and charged with trespassing after a protest on the University of Notre Dame's campus.
The protest was over the university’s plans to have President Obama deliver Notre Dame’s commencement speech and receive an honorary degree on May 17th.
The gathering, while peaceful, was also dramatic and involved dolls covered with stage blood to portray aborted babies.
"We are angry because Notre Dame is supposed to be a Catholic, pro-life university,” explained one of those arrested.
“Yet the school chose Obama as their commencement speaker, even though he supports abortion rights and embryonic stem-cell research.”
The meeting of about 75 people started outside the campus with a speech by Keyes, a former Republican presidential candidate. The speech was then followed by several group prayers.
After the prayers, Keyes led a group across the campus border with the bloodied dolls in carriages.
Keyes and 21 others were then handcuffed and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail, where they are being held on $250 bond for their trespassing violations.
According to CNSNews, on Thursday Keyes was on public property when two plain clothes Notre Dame policemen told that he would be arrested if he stepped foot on campus.
Several Catholic bishops believe as the protestors do, and have refused to attend Notre Dame’s commencement ceremony.
Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of the Phoenix Diocese has called the selection of Obama "a public act of disobedience" and "a grave mistake."
In addition, Bishop John D'Arcy has said that he would not attend the ceremony because of Obama's policies. D’Arcy is in charge of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese, which is where Notre Dame is located.
These bishops and others believe that Notre Dame is violating a statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops in 2004.
This statement says “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”
The protestors are particularly upset that Obama is funding the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which supports China’s one-child policy that includes coercive abortion.
Alumni and students are evenly divided on the matter of Obama speaking at the graduation. The majority of alumni do not want Obama to speak. However, most students, particularly the graduating seniors, are supportive of the president.
