Just when you thought it was safe to get back on the iPhone bandwagon, the most popular smartphone in the world gets possessed by a legion demonic enemies. Doom, the classic game that blew the doors off the first-person genre when it was released back in 1993, is coming to the iPhone in the form of Doom Resurrection.
And this isn't no quick port done by some anonymous third-party developer. This is Doom for the iPhone done by John Carmack, one of the guys behind the original Doom. His game development company, Escalation Studios, has been working on Doom Resurrection for some time now.
In fact, it almost didn't happen. The first iteration of the game came out to be rather bland by Carmack's standards, so they almost threw it under the proverbial bus. But then Escalation played around with a new interface where you aim by tilting the iPhone backwards and forwards or side-to-side, and the fun sprang back into the game.
Many of the assets for Doom Resurrection are coming right out of Doom 3, so don't be surprised if it gives you a big case of deja vu. Doom Resurrection should be available from the app store some time in the coming weeks.
