There has been a lot of speculation recently on gaming forums around the internet that Gears of War 3 will not be released on the Xbox 360 but instead for the next generation of consoles. This conjecture started after the president of Epic Games said during a Q&A session at TGS that, "If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is."

Eurogamer actually caught up with Mr. Capps at TGS after he said this and he explained to them that he mispoke and if Gears of War 3 were to come out in the next four or five years (assuming it exists at all) that it would indeed be on this generation of consoles.

This actually makes more sense as a new Xbox 360 is probably not going to be released any time soon. Back in June, analyst Michael Pachter predicted there would not be a new Xbox 360 for the next five years. His reasoning for this is that Project Natal represents the next step in console hardware for Microsoft. Microsoft is not going to sink all of their time and money developing such a complex motion control system for the 360 only to release the "720" a few years later.

The original Gears was released in November 2006. It's sequel, Gears of War 2, was released almost exactly two years later in November 2008. Based on this trend, should we expect the third Gears to be in 2010? If it does come out later than that, it might utilize Project Natal's motion sensing technology. Will players have their couch overturned in the middle of the living room and be taking cover behind it to make Marcus duck behind a barriacade in the game? While that does sound silly, it would actually be pretty fun. If such were the case, however, then we probably would have seen Epic's name on the list of Natal partners recently released by Microsoft. Blockbusters like Gears games take years to develop so you would expect that they are already working on it.

Another reason that Gears of War 3 will more than likely come out sooner on the 360 than later on the 720 is that they are Epic's top sellers. According to VGChartz, the original sold 5.91 million units on the 360 alone and the sequel sold 5.23 million copies. It wouldn't make sense for Epic to wait five years to release another Gears when they could easily sell 5 million on the 360. While maybe playing Gears of War 3 by ducking behind the couch is wishful thinking and it won't use Project Natal, it still makes much more sense that the game will come out on the Xbox 360 and not five years from now on the 720.
