In a previous article, I shared the top picks for vegetables that are in season in September and discussed some of the benefits of eating seasonal foods.
Seasonal fruits, just like the vegetables that are in season, serve to give us what we need at this time of year.
In September central California is dry and can be quite warm, so many of these seasonal fruits lubricate, supply fluids, cool the body and help ease constipation (a dry condition).
The top five seasonal fruits for September:
1) Apples – Apples contain malic and tartaric acid, which inhibit fermentation in the stomach and make apples among the easiest to digest of all fruits. They are cleansing and, green apples especially, benefit the liver and gallbladder. Enjoy these perennial favorites eaten out of hand, topped with almond butter or baked with cinnamon and butter.
2) Pears – Great for stomach and lungs, pears are a good source of fiber and pectin, so they help with constipation and cleansing the body of environmental toxins. Combine them with raspberries in your next green smoothie, snack on sliced pears and organic raw cheddar or bake into a crumble.
3) Figs – Figs are divine, intoxicating and the highest sugar fruit, so eat them in moderation and savor every bite! They are not as cooling as some of the other fruits and benefit the lungs and large intestine according to Chinese theory. Once for ounce they contain more calcium than cows milk. Try a bone-building smoothie: 3 fresh figs, ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries, a handful raw spinach and/or parsley and ½ to 1 cup almond or hemp milk and blend preferably in a high-speed blender.
4) Grapes – Grapes help relieve inflammation in the throat, mouth, gums and eyes and are said to be strengthening to the internal organs. They are high in antioxidants and contain good amounts of vitamin A, B-complex and C. A great treat for kids (both small and large): freeze washed and dried grapes on a large baking sheet. Enjoy them as refreshing sweet treat.
5) Melons – Melons are an excellent potassium source and the orange varieties have a good amount of beta carotene. Red watermelon supplies a good dose of lycopene. Melons are the most cooling fruit and digest very quickly. Enjoy these water-rich fruits on a hot late summer afternoon.
Eating these fruits when they are in season means enjoying peak flavor and nutrition.
