The American Homebrewers Association (AHA), a national homebrewing association established in 1978 by our own beer examiner, Charlie Papazian, offers many useful resources and conferences to the homebrewing enthusiast. For starters, there are such events as the AHA's National Homebrewers Conference, the National Homebrew Competition, and of course, The Great American Beer Festival. Recently, another great resource has been added to the web site- the AHA's interactive online community, where the 19,000+ homebrewers already on the AHA's roster can mingle, share brewing stories and recipes, and read about featured homebrewers. Furthermore, even online visitors who are not part of the AHA can also add their comments and feedback.

Here are some of the main features of the AHA's new online community site (in the AHA's own words):

  • AHA Forum - An online discussion group for all topics of homebrewing, open to everyone, from the most accomplished brewer to the beginner. Within the first few days of the website launch, more than 6000 participants have registered and more than 3,500 posts were listed.

  • Homebrewopedia: a Recipe Wiki - The AHA Homebrewopedia is a wiki-based resource, allowing homebrewers from around the world to share their recipes and brewing knowledge. Medal winning recipes from past National Homebrew Competitions can also be found here, allowing others to learn from the best in hobby.

  • Pimp my System - The AHA is proud to give homebrewers the opportunity to show off their elaborate and creative brewing systems on the homepage of HomebrewersAssociation.org. Homebrewers are encouraged to post entries in the Homebrewers Bio area on the AHA Forum, where systems are selected to be featured each month.

  • Brewer of the Week - Homebrewers have great stories to tell, and the AHA is proud to share them with the community. Brewers can post a bio about themselves in the Homebrewers Bio area on the AHA forum, and several will be chosen each month to feature on HomebrewersAssociation.org.

  • Club Profiles & Resources - These pages contain articles geared towards helping homebrew clubs with events and management as well as a section on homebrew Club Profiles. Clubs can post a description and photographs to share and several will be featured each month on HombrewersAssociation.org.

With so many great topics and resources, this new online community will be of great benefit to both the new and seasoned homebrewer. On a local level, one can also find out what is going on with their own area breweries by visiting and signing up at the Support Your Local Brewery site. This place provides brewing news at the state level at its Know the Issues page.
