The price for Final Fantasy 13 is confirmed to be 8800 Japanese Yen before tax, or approximately $95 USD according to RPG Site. The after tax price, which actually kills you because the price is significantly higher, is closer to $100. Remember, this is the Japanese market, which can and does price PS3 games at a higher premium. Much like in the UK (see bottom article) for now it's arranged for one particular market. However, is this even a trend at all?
This is now the second well known price hike for a Playstation 3 game in about a month, but don't get worried yet. It initially seems crazy, but the high Japanese prices were already planned in 2006. The first truly abnormal change was the price of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2 issued for the UK, coming to about $90 for the US. Many publishers have refrained from commenting on that move, noting that it's basically walking on eggshells and could provoke more than they want. As for the US, the maximum price tag for most games has risen by $10 since the last generation, while still not quit reaching price of the SNES and Nintendo 64 era.
Before price increases even come into play, special edition packs, DLC, etc. have hiked up the overall price of the game for some time already. Some can spend over $100 on a special edition game, only to be offered DLC a month later for another $5-$10 dollars. The prices for special edition packs are astoundingly high compared to the past. Companies will shove anything inside the box they can: helmets, military equipment, or mock life-sized weapons to entice the buyer. So before thinking about new pricing standards, try considering about how much you truly spend based on your real needs.
