Rockstar has just declared that the DS rendition of GTA was a failure. By announcing the port of Chinatown Wars for the PSP, Rockstar is clearly displeased with the sales numbers of the game for the DS and wants to get the game in more hands. Sadly, GTA:CW was one of the highest reviewed games for the DS and the sales just didn’t follow. You could attribute this to the fact the DS is mainly owned by casual gamers, or that the younger crowd of gamers who own a DS just don’t want to play a GTA game. Who knows why the game bombed on DS.
Even with the latest announcement of the game coming to the PSP, will the game really have that many more sales? The graphics will see some slight enhancements but nothing too extraordinary. This could be a recipe for disaster. The previous two GTA entries on the PSP were full 3D games like the PS2 versions. That’s what gamers associate GTA to these days. The DS version went the way of the older GTA titles with the top down viewpoint found in GTA and GTA2. Let’s be honest; GTA was good in those days but it didn’t appeal to the mass audience it does now until they introduced the open world and sandbox style gameplay in GTA3. That revolutionized the series.

With a different graphical presentation and gameplay orientation, will PSP gamers want to play this GTA? It’s clear that the PSP has a strong GTA fanbase and that the game has a strong chance of doing well on the system. In a world that graphics mean more than gameplay in many circumstance, will this game suffer the same fate as it did on the DS? I fear that the game won’t perform to expectations once again. The content is amazing but the gamers don’t want to take a step back into the old gameplay days of GTA. They want that 3D look and feel that fell in love with in GTA3.
