Jon and Kate are over -- for now

After teasing us with a Jon and Kate Plus 8 announcement for the last several days the big secret has finally been revealed straight from the horse's mouth: Jon and Kate are getting divorced. Kate will be staying at "the kids' house" and Jon will be getting his own place.

Speculation has been brewing that Jon and Kate were announcing their divorce -- after all, they haven't been seen together much lately, with Jon and Kate supposedly apart on their anniversary, and Kate disappearing on Father's Day. Clear signs that they're not anxious to spend time around each other. Not to mention rumors that Jon and Kate had already separated -- which turned out to be accurate, at least in a physical sense.

Kate claims that none of this was brought on by fame and fortune:

It's the next chapter. Not a chapter that's been brought on by our show, not a chapter that's been caused by our career choices at all. I believe that it's a chapter that probably would have been played out had the world been watching, or not.

Jon said that he had been putting up with Kate "ruling the roost" for a long time, and that he's standing "up on his two feet" and he's proud of himself.

A previous report estimated that a Gosselin divorce could be worth $10 million.

What I'm surprised about is that this is the first step -- no marriage counseling with that many kids? Really? Let's hope Jon and Kate will wake up and try to seriously work things out and reconcile -- shared custody is hard enough, not to mention doing it with 8 children.
