Many parents worry about whether or not the movie their child wants to see is appropriate for viewing. It may be rated PG, but why exactly? And what is in that PG-13 movie that your teen will be exposed to? In Good Housekeeping this month, there is an article that lists three websites that essentially help you monitor movies in theaters and on DVD and assist you in determining beforehand whether or not you want your child seeing certain flicks.
Kids-in-mind.com: This great website rates movies on a scale of 1 to 10 in three different categories, sex and nudity, violence and gore, and profanity. When you see a title of a movie, you'll notice a sequence of three numbers. For example, 'The Hangover' is 10-7-10, and clearly not a movie you want your little ones to see! It also gies exact descriptions of what you will see or hear in each category, so you're aware of the circumstances surrounding the profanity or violence. It's an easy to navigate website, so check it out!
ParentPreviews.com: Movies are graded like report cards on this site, in the categories of language, sexual content, drugs and alcohol, and violence. There are complete movie summaries, with a breakdown of what happens in each category. In addition, there are alternative suggestions for similar movies that might be more suitable as well as discussion questions that you can use to talk to your kids about after the movie.
Commonsensemedia.org: The categories differ slightly on this website, with the usual language, sex, and violence but also added to the mix is drinking/drugs, consumerism, and role models and message. In this way, you can see what kinds of product placement is being used, if there are potential role models, and more. The site also has an age suggestion for each movie. It's not limited to just movies, though. Common Sense Media also reviews online games, tv shows, books, and more.
