Heidi Montag grew up in Crested Butte, Colorado where her classmates nicknamed her “Rocky Mountain Barbie”. During her second semester of her Junior year she traveled to Italy where, according to classmates, she fell in love with fashion and decided to finish high school early in order to pursue her dreams. During freshman orientation at the Academy of Art University in San Fransisco, California, she met Lauren Conrad. "Everyone in the room was kind of gothy, and we were the two blond girls in the room scared out of our minds," Montag told the New York Times in 2006. "I ran up to her and said, 'Will you please talk to me.'" The blonde duo forged a friendship which they would take to the small screen upon their move to Los Angeles with the Laguna Beach spin-off on Lauren Conrad's life The Hills.

The first season of the show followed Conrad with Heidi as her lovestruck sidekick during their trials and tribulations of their first year in L.A.  America fell in love with the BFFs and couldn't wait to find out what fun the girls would have trying their hands at adulthood in the City of Angels. While Conrad flourishes at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Heidi decides to drop out and lands a job at the hot Bolthouse Productions.

Perhaps tired of being in LC's shadow, Heidi begins a relationship that would rock ratings, fans, and change the face of The Hills forever. Spencer Pratt joins the show as the bad-boy boyfriend with a wandering eye and Chesire grin. As predicted by Conrad, this new leading man would lead to the BFF break-up beginning with Spencer's urging LC's ex, Brody Jenner, to hook up with Jen Bunney which left Lauren feeling betrayed and hurt.

In April 2007 Heidi underwent major plastic surgery, electing to upgrade her bust line to 32C along with a nosejob.  In an interview with Access Hollywood she said, “"It was really something that had been tormenting me and I was very insecure about it...I thought about it for several years and I waited until I had the finances and really thought about it and was old enough to really make a mature decision."

Later that month, Spencer planted the rumor that would deliver the final blow to the Lauren/Heidi friendship. On his website, Pratt dished out vulgar insults and denied any involvement with the Jason Wahler sex tape rumors. He accused the couple of creating it themselves and so began the feud that would give MTV's premiere of The Hills their highest rated show in 2007.

Before the end of the year Heidi lands the cover of Cosmogirl to the chagrin of many Hill's fans who firmly sided with the jilted Lauren Conrad. In early 2008 Montag appeared on the cover of Maxim magazine. Within a month she attempts to break into the music industry with the release of her flopped music video, “Higher”.

In May the white flag is flown for the cover of Rolling Stone which featured Lauren Conrad along with Heidi Montag, Whitney Port and Audrina Partridge. The magazine calls  "a maddeningly addictive TV show in which nothing ever really happens.”

In November Spencer and Heidi, after a tumultuous on again off again on-screen relationship, and a little too much Patron, get married in Mexico, which is shared on season 4. Unfortunately California does not recognize marriages performed out of the country. The couple decides to marry in a civil ceremony despite the protests of Heidi's mother and sister. In one of the only magnanimous acts Spencer Pratt ever makes on The Hills, he agrees to postpone the wedding until he can deliver the one from Heidi's dreams.

Season 5 brought with it some attempts at reconciliation on Heidi's part with a resistant Lauren Conrad. Speidi shared their wedding with MTV as part of the season's finale. The affair had over 200 guests comprised of the entire cast of The Hills, including Kristin Cavallari, the Laguna Beach flashback who will take Lauren Conrad's place in the show's 6th season.

As filming of The Hills ended the newlyweds entered the jungles of Costa Rica to appear on the show “I'm a Celebrity...Get me Out of Here”. On the show the couple quit three times, begged their way back, only for Heidi to get sick and have to leave the show anyway.  Fans weren't the only ones angered by their performance. The show producer and even mild-mannered weather man, Al Roker, are Speidi haters.  A recent E! Poll overwhelmingly voted for Heidi and Spencer to be banned from the channel.

Season 6 of The Hills promises to be filled with drama, but without Lauren Conrad, skeptics don't think this show will survive on Speidi alone.
