While residing in Manoa Valley in the 1920’s and 1930’s, international artist, Charles W. Bartlett, painted watercolors depicting life in Hawaii.  His work is considered to be some of the finest art of the period.

A small collection of Bartlett’s work is on display throughout the public areas of the Aqua Waikiki Wave hotel (and in guest rooms) - see images below of the hotel entry, lobby and all-purpose room.

When the hotel was totally renovated and upgraded in late 2006, the interior designer had giclees created of a number of Bartlett’s Hawaiian prints:  “Duke-Waikiki, 1920”; “Lei Day Hawaii, 1923”; “Hawaiian Fisherman, 1919”; “Catamarans, 1923”; “Hawaiian Mother and Child, 1923”; and “Surf-Riders Honolulu, 1919.”

Anyone interested in seeing his Hawaiian works can stop by the hotel for a look.

For a different glimpse of Bartlett’s work, an upcoming exhibition at the Honolulu Academy of Arts will feature his Japan-inspired watercolors and prints.  Here’s an excerpt from their publicity materials:

A Hawaiian Master Revisited: Charles Bartlett at the Honolulu Academy of Arts

Continuing the Academy’s year-long celebration of British-born Hawaii artist, Charles Bartlett, a selection of Bartlett’s watercolors and prints from his travels in Japan will go on view in August.

The display will include prints designed for the Japanese publisher Watanabe Shozaburo that mark the beginning of the important shin-hanga or ‘new woodblock print’ movement, one of the most influential developments in Japanese woodblock prints during the 20th century.
