Meet Matt Malone, possibly Portland’s first mobile marketer. He’s an SEO (search engine optimization) agent and public relations and social marketing specialist who has clients all over the country. He‘s the kind of guy who gets things going because he likes to.
Born and raised in the Kelso/Longview area, he grew up in Washington state, but knows Portland and it’s people. At 24, he found the pace of college painstakingly slow and frustrating, but knew it was a necessary step in getting to what he wanted in life, even though he wasn’t really sure what that was. Preferring to work with people and not just paperwork, he knew something in communications would befit him, and it did, for a while.
He got married to Tawny in 2007, and in October of 2008 their son, Jaxon was born. They call him Jax for short, and he’s been the apple of his dad’s eye ever since. Malone took the first year of Jax’s life as a stay-at-home dad, while his wife works as a teacher.
He’s a true Pacific North-Westerner and he loves to fish, hike and camp. He expressed a desire to take his family to Alaska, where his in-laws go every summer on a cruise. As most fishermen, he’d like to try his hand at bringing in his limit of Pacific salmon.
It’s really important to Malone to like what he does and be happy in life. After raising his son for a year, he decided to go back to work, and found the work world seriously deficit in fun, and the economy was just beginning to tank at the time.
He took a position with an SEO company that wasn’t really run very well, and when his boss couldn’t pay him and the business sank, the clients paid Malone to continue his work. Just like that, he’s in business for himself and can now take time to do things he likes to do, like brew homemade beer and wines and play with Jax.
He likes micro brews so much, he got an idea. He thought it would be nice, since most of America is texting each other, if people could receive coupons for free beer or appetizers from certain establishments. He picked on the small, less-established breweries first, and he’s signing them up for the SMS (texting) program.
