Officials announced the second human infection of avian influenza (bird flu) in Vietnam this year.
Meanwhile, as officials tried to eliminate approximately 1,500 infected chickens, villagers attacked them.
It was reported by the Associated Press that more than 100 villagers attacked officials as they tried to put infected birds into a pit to kill them. The birds had reportedly been smuggled into the area from China.
Officials tried to explain to the villagers of the Thuong Tin district just outside Hanoi that the birds were not edible. They paid no heed and overwhelmed the 30+ health officials and police officers who were trying to remove the chickens from a truck to put into a pit to be burned.
The villagers grabbed the chickens and ran.
The woman who became infected after slaughtering and eating chicken from her farm, is on a respirator in the hospital in the northern Quang Ninh province. The other members of her family who were also exposed to the birds have not become ill.
