Punk Rock Yoga

Embracing the classic punk slogan of “do it yourself,” Punk Rock Yoga has been attracting members and expanding to cities across the nation for the past several years. Punk Rock Yoga aims to erase the snobbery and elitist attitudes that have been pervading Western yoga for the past couple decades and bring it back to its inclusive roots.

The name may be a bit misleading since the class isn’t necessarily exclusive to punks or lovers of The Clash. The name actually refers to the punk attitude of affecting change and stepping out of the mainstream. In this sense the yoga classes are made up of all ages and all levels and held in nontraditional spaces with live bands or musicians rather than the typical soft yoga music. However, the music does stay at a yoga-style pace.

Kimberlee Jenson Stedl, creator of Punk Rock Yoga, began this style in 2003 with the goal of tearing down the boundaries set up around yoga by first and foremost breaking down the notion that yoga is only for upper-middle class white women. This approach has led to a following that has continued to grow over the years. Classes now take place in many major cities such as Toronto, New York, Las Vegas, Boston and of course, Seattle, to name a few.

At the moment the Seattle classes are being offered on Tuesdays from 7:15 to 8:45pm at 20/20 Cycles on 2020 East Union Street. The drop in rate is just $10. If you have always wanted to try yoga or are a seasoned vet, give yourself a challenge. Step off the tried and true path and into Punk Rock Yoga.
