After the holidays January always seems to be a bit of an anticlimax. Winter is settled in with short, gray days and we fall back in to our workday routines. Before SAD sets in, and between rounds of light therapy, you might consider getting out of town. Even if you can't afford to chase the sun to the south there are some day trips and events in the area that hold out the promise of a little winter fun. Click on the links for full information.
Head out to Lake Chelan January 16th through the 18th for Winterfest: Fire & Ice at the Lake. You'll find ice sculptures, ice skating, fireworks, snowmobile races and a torchlight parade among other things.
January 17th & 18th is the Bavarian Ice Fest in Leavenworth featuring dog sled rides, sleigh rides, fireworks, skiing and plenty of winter fun.
For the 22nd year in a row you can celebrate the Upper Skagit Bald Eagle Festival centered in Concrete, WA. Take a bus ride to view eagles, go on a volkswalk, eat a salmon dinner and find plenty to entertain you the weekend of the 24th and 25th.

Want to get even farther out of town? The River City Bluegrass Festival will be held in Portland, OR from January 9th through the 11th.
Or, head in the other direction to Vancouver, B.C. any time between January 14th and February 1st for Dine Out Vancouver. Today, January 5th, is the first day that the website will be showing what restaurants are participating, what the prix-fixe menus are and will allow you to make reservations online. Vancouver is a dining mecca - I would jump on this.
