Free screening of documentary TULIA, TEXAS

In July of 1999, 46 people were arrested in the small town of Tulia, Texas on drug charges based on the undercover work of "gypsy cop" Tom Coleman. 39 of those arrested were African Americans and most were convicted. By five years later, as  new information came to light about Coleman and his methods, and cases were challenged, most of them had been freed.

The documentary TULIA, TEXAS follows a story that was both of one of the biggest drug busts in the history of Texas and a huge miscarriage of justice. Thanks to Community Cinema, TULIA, TEXAS will be shown for free on Saturday, January 24th at 3:15 at SIFF Cinema. Community Cinema screens movies every month from the PBS series Independent Lens in cities across the country. Panel discussions follow the film, and you will be hearing from "ACLU of WA lawyers who worked on the actual cases in Tulia and local civil rights scholars."

From the website:
"Community Cinema Seattle is presented by KCTS9 Television Seattle, KBCS 91.3 FM Community Radio, The City of Seattle Office for Civil Rights and the Seattle International Film Festival. Community Cinema Seattle was named "Best Film Series in Seattle" by Seattle Metropolitan magazine in July 2008, and we're still 100% free."
