Bumbershoot's non-music side

Comedian Patton Oswalt coutresy Wired.com

Bumbershoot has garnered notoriety in the Pacific Northwest mainly for the major musical acts that come to the big Labor Day event each year. Some musical acts of recent years included Kanye West in 2006, Panic! At the Disco in 2007 and Beck in 2008. This year has quite the musical lineup going with The Black Eyed Peas and Sheryl Crow taking the top spots, but music is not all Bumbershoot has to offer.

This year plenty of comedy, literary arts and performing arts will be going on all weekend. For the comedy side be sure to check out Comedy Central favorite and star of several films and television shows including Ratatouille, King of Queens and even Spongebob Squarepants, Patton Oswalt. Fellow Comedy Central alums include the woman with a hundred voices Maria Bamford, whom Oswalt has noted as one of the most creative and original comics working today, and Doug Benson of VH1’s Best Week Ever fame.

On the literary arts side join David Cross, who has been in numerous television shows and film, as he light-heartedly discusses his life as a comedian, writer and actor. S.E. Hinton, famous author of The Outsiders will also make an appearance as well as Carlton Cuse, Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who are collectively known as the writers of LOST. The list for literary arts is full of amazing creators whom Seattle, widely known as one of the most literate city in the nation, will surely enjoy.

The performing and visual arts side of Bumbershoot has a packed agenda of sensory testing shows such as Wise Fool New Mexico, which blends the whimsy of circus arts with the power of activism. On the other side of the spectrum the Pacific Northwest Ballet will perform just in time to entice and lure in the holiday masses for their version of The Nutcracker this winter.

Bumbershoot has always snagged headlines with its impressive lineup of musicians, but for those making the journey this Labor Day weekend, be sure not to leave out the once in a lifetime events taking place through comedy, literary and performing/visual arts.
