Happy anniversary! Today the Marine Corps. celebrates their 234th year of service. The Marines were formed in 1775 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Today is a big day for those who have served, are serving, and those of us that are grateful and appreciate the service of others.

Retired Master Sergeant Richard Bowers says the first anniversary celebration took place in 1921. 'Every year on Nov. 10, Marines around the globe celebrate the birthday of the Corps,' Bowers said. In 1921 General Lejeune ordered a celebration in November and the tradition has continued for the last 88 years.

If you have served or are serving in the Marines you may want to join the Marin County's official Veterans Day program tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. The celebration will take place Wednesday at the Marin Center's Veterans Memorial Auditorium. The Air National Guard Band of the West Coast will perform, and students from the Novato High School Junior ROTC program will conduct flag exercises. The guest speaker will be Cmdr. Kiley Ross of the U.S. Coast Guard 11th District. This event is free, no tickets are required.

If you would like to donate to a cause that would benefit the Marines head to the 'Holidays in the Vineyards' which will take place in early December and and all toys donated at the event will go to the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation. This event requires reservations and will happens from noon to 5 p.m. on December 5-6. Begin the holiday season with 37 wineries, music, arts and crafts, gifts, and holiday fun.
