Big Bear has always been a great place for bicycle enthusiasts.  There are hundreds of trails for mountain bikes, scenic routes on area streets, and the easily navigated Alpine Pedal Path on Big Bear Lake's north shore.  There are routes just right for all abilities.

With Big Bear set to host the Big Bear Climb, the 6th segment of the upcoming Amgen Tour of California professional men's bicycle race, the area is working hard to become even more bicycle friendly.

Streets around the Big Bear Valley have been designated as bicycle routes for visitors and residents to enjoy.  Signs along the designated streets alert cars, bicycles and pedestrians to share the roads.

Now, a detailed map of bicycle routes within the City of Big Bear Lake is available online from Gobo Trail and Activity Guides.  The map includes mile markers and landmarks along three loops and one transition route covering almost 15 miles.  Parking and restroom information is included.

The easiest and most level loop is in the Eagle Point area, aproximately 3.5 miles through quiet neighborhoods near the lake.  A shorter route with a few more hills is designated as the Lakeview loop.  Beginning at the Aspen Glen picnic area, this route winds it's way by several marinas and the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest.

The most challenging route on the map is the Moonridge Loop, 6.5 miles beginning in the Foxfarm area, climbing to Bear Mountain Resort and the current site of the Moonridge Animal Park.  This loop also takes you past the Bear Mountain Golf Course and Snow Summit's Scenic Sky Chair, where you can ride to the top of the mountain for additional hiking and mountain biking opportunities.

A high resolution map in .pdf (Adobe Reader) format is easy to download and print from the Gobo site.  One side shows the routes on the map.  The other includes the detailed information about mileage and way points.

Big Bear's cool mountain air makes bicycling enjoyable from early May, throughout the summer and into the fall.  While you are in Big Bear, it's an easy bicycle ride to the Visitor Center for more information about what to see and do in the area.
