If you’re between the age of 16 and 28 – and you think you can sing – then American Idol auditions are the place to be on Thursday, July 9 at the Amway Arena in Orlando! It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for singers looking to be discovered.

In May, after the Season 8 finale and
Kris Allen’s visit to Walt Disney World following his big win over
Adam Lambert – it seemed Idol mania was behind us, at least for a while. But now as American Idol auditions are being thrust upon Orlando for the next several days, Central Floridians and those traveling great distances to be here have the unique opportunity to get caught up in the fanfare. I anticipate traffic-headaches galore, as well as much excitement in the air! Registration starts on Tuesday, July 7 at 8 a.m. and runs for 48 hours.
The big audition day
As a singer-songwriter myself, I can appreciate the butterflies-in-the-stomach sensation that performers must surely feel during their “do or die” moment in front of the judges.
Will they forget their lyrics… will they stand out enough to be noticed? When they open their mouth to hit the notes they’ve practiced for countless hours will they get an alien sound that shocks even them, or will it be music to the judges’ ears? It is enough to make even the most experienced performer shake in their boots and turn green with nausea!
Talent vs. non-talent?
If I were within the age category – which I’m not – then I might be joining the thousands of other hopefuls who choose to showcase their talent – or non-talent. As Idol fans know, auditions identify not only the best, but also the “vocally challenged.” The show ends up highlighting singers from both ends of the talent spectrum.
On Thursday, July 8, judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi will start making or breaking dreams with their votes – giving singers a pass to either “head to Hollywood” or “hit the road.”
The launch of a dream
American Idol has launched many music careers including Kelly Clarkson from Season 1, to county superstar Carrie Underwood, to our latest champion Kris Allen. The popularity of the American Idol reality TV show is staggering.
During the Season 8 finale, a record-breaking 100 million votes were cast as FOX viewers used their power to choose between glam rocker
Adam Lambert and underdog contender
Kris Allen.
