Legendary sportscaster Len Berman is elated. His latest kids book, 'The Greatest Moments in Sports' just made the New York Times best-seller list.
"It's a first for me, and needless to say I'm thrilled," said Berman in an interview with the Examiner today. The book will debut at No. 9 in the Chapter Books section of the Children's Books category of the list on Sunday Dec. 6.
According to Berman, the book deals with superstars and super moments and covers many eras starting with Babe Ruth's so-called "called shot" and ending with David Tyree's Super Bowl catch.
The book also contains an audio CD of actual broadcasts to relive the drama and excitement of events as they happened. Some of the actual broadcasts include David Tyree's Super Bowl helmet catch, Wayne Gretzky's breaking of the NHL scoring record, Michael Jordan's championship buzzer-beater, Hank Aaron beating Babe Ruth's home run record, Brandi Chastain's World Cup winning penalty kick, the U.S. Olympic hockey team's miracle on ice and Michael Phelps breaking Mark Spitz's Olympic swimming record.
Berman said he was "floored" when he first heard about his book being selected to the the New York Times best-seller list. "Now I actually have an answer when somebody asks me why I majored in English in college," he joked. Berman added the reaction to the book had been amazing. "It was released as a kids book, and everyone says it looks more like an adult table book."
"We're elated to add 'New York Times bestselling author' to Len's many, many accolades," said Todd Stocke, vice president and editorial director of Sourcebooks, the publisher.
Berman's other books include 'Spanning the World: The Crazy Universe of Big-Time Sports, All-Star Egos, and Hall of Fame Bloopers', 'And Nobody Got Hurt!: The World's Weirdest, Wackiest True Sports Stories' and 'And Nobody Got Hurt 2!' His next children's book, 'The 25 Greatest Baseball Players of All Time' is slated for release next October.
The Emmy-award winning sportscaster will be signing copies of his book on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at Barnes & Noble located at the Princeton Marketfair in Princeton from 4.30 p.m. onwards.
Berman currently manages his own website, Thats Sports, where he sends out free daily emails to subscribers of his Top 5 sports stories of the day. His Top 5 email is also featured on The Huffington Post and is received by thousands around the country.
