November 14, 2009-- Last Night, NYU's Kimmel Center was the place to be. Over 300 students from across the city came together to benefit Save a Child's Heart (SACH)--an Israeli-based international humanitarian project, whose mission is to improve the quality of pediatric cardiac care for children from developing countries who suffer from heart disease and to create centers of competence in these countries.
"Last year's show was amazing and this year's was even more amazing. When we all sat down to plan this year's show we looked at all the different parts that could use improvement and we made those improvements. That included more modeling practices, better communicating strategies, better promotions, better sponsorships and most importantly to be able to raise more money and the most money possible for the charity, Save a Child's Heart," Natan Edelsburg, head of publicity for the show, said.
Hila Elroy, the Adviser to the Consul General of Israel in New York, felt it was important to come support the fashion show. "Thank you very much for inviting me, this is my first fashion show in New York!" It was important for Elroy to attend because "first and foremost this is a foundation based in Israel and what's better than saving a child's heart. I enjoyed the show very much. I think I will buy a few of the dresses."
The event was sponsored by ReadyU and Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly. Alex Babazadeh, IJC Co-President, says that thanks to last night's fashion show, they have come very close to their goal of $10,000. "We are continuing to raise money through donations and follow up events. We are also waiting to hear back from Ticket Central, to get finale numbers. After taking into account private donations made and the items that were auctioned that are still being continued as we speak, we are convinced we are going to reach our goal!," Alex said.
Money was raised through: tickets, a Kaplan raffle, clothing auctions, Wall of Hearts, and the after party, in addition to donations. One of the highlights of the show was choreographed by Rebecca Zhou, the president of NYU's Modeling Club. Zhou came up with the idea of having Herbal Essences sponsor the Red Line (in which every model wore something red) to honor the charity, Save a Child's Heart. They impressed everyone with their talent in creating a choreographed dance/walk to the song TiK ToK, by KE$HA. They wanted to bring attention to showing how much Herbal Essences helped with the show, but more importantly to get people excited and to encourage them to bid on the silent auctions. The idea behind the red line was to showcase the different array of products from the new Tousle Me Softly line.
Herbal Essences provided styling tip cards that were placed in each of the goody bags, and there was a demo table during desert hour hour where students and attendees were able to get their hair done with the different products from the Tousle Me Softly line.
Over the past four months, hundreds of hours were spent on putting this show together across clubs and organizations at NYU. "The Iranian Jewish Club at NYU was founded on the idea of uniting students of a common heritage and culture based on such an amazing and unique history. Just as important, we are able to unite tonight not just to have a great time, but also to contribute and donate towards to truly worthwhile cause. Through our music, food, and hospitality we wanted to let people outside the our community to know and experience our warm and welcoming culture. The event was an incredible success, tickets had sold out before the doors opened. People had said that in the 4 years they've gone to NYU, they haven't been to such a big and fun event," Alex Babazadeh said.
The Modeling Club was instrumental in the event. From the beginning, they helped the IJC organize and make the event a success. They spent hours training the models and coming up with nights sequence. They really put the show together and made it look beyond professional. Rebecca Zhou and Amanda Aponte deserve special recognition for their efforts. The fashion show also featured performances from Ani V'Ata and a new artist named Danny D.
Josh Asherian, one of the IJC co-presidents, reflected on the evening. "On this night our goal was to send out a message showing that acts of selflessness and charity are not only rewarding, but can also be enjoyable. We also wanted to show that events like ours can be done by anyone, even students who have full time jobs, as long as there is teamwork and a true passion to make a difference fueling the process. In essence I believe everyone has the time to contribute to helping others, but the only thing that holds them back is whether or not they choose to sacrifice the time and their own pleasure."
