When you look at Lucy’s bright brown eyes and shiny black fur it’s hard to imagine that the beginning of her life was rocky or that she still needs a home. Thanks to East Lake Pet Orphanage's ongoing commitment to homeless animals, Lucy was saved and in turn saved a tiny puppy’s life. Each year hundreds of pets are given second chances by ELPO through money raised by their events and ongoing donations by animal lovers. Next door to the East Lake Veterinary Hospital is East Lake Pet Orphanage where Lucy lives and waits for her forever home.
Lucy’s story is now part of Ryan and Sara Hartshorn’s story. When they brought their 8-½ week old Yorkie, Toby, to the East Lake Veterinary Hospital with all the excitement and anticipation a new puppy entails, they had no idea they were about to lose him. They saw pictures of Toby and eagerly waited until he was old enough to bring home. After only 12 hours a critical decision had to be made to save his life. Toby had intestinal worms that caused internal bleeding. He needed a blood transfusion or he would bleed to death. With the help of Dr. Barton, Lucy was able to donate a tiny amount of blood—only 17cc, but that small amount was all that was needed to save Toby’s life.
Ryan shared, “After Lucy gave Toby the blood for his transfusion, it only took 24 hours for him to become a spunky, full of energy little puppy again. Lucy didn’t just give him blood…Lucy gave Toby life. My wife and I now claim to own a Lorkie…a mix between a Labrador and a Yorkie. Lucy will forever have a warm spot in our hearts!”
Not only is Lucy a lifesaver, she is also a runway diva having participated in the East Lake Pet Orphanage’s Wine on the Roof Event. Talented fashion designers created handsewn outfits for the homeless animals to generate awareness for the annual fundraiser. Through their dedication to animals, Lucy and many others will find good homes. Lucy is still waiting for someone special to take her home to complete her story. She is included in this slideshow with other adoptable pets.

What an excellent story!! More people should know about this story! And about the dangers of parasites for dogs and the dangers of fleas - fleas can bring worms which in turn can KILL dogs. Spend the little bit of money and get your pets on a monthly preventative folks, you would never let your children walk around with worms!
Awwww. I love stories like this. I hope Lucy finds a good home. She deserves one.
I can't wait to hear the good news when Lucy finds her home. She's a sweet doggie. Thanks for your comments.
