Don't lose your marvels

We live in an amazing world filled with incredible sights.  From trees to stars, from mountains to oceans, from babies to deer running through the woods -- we are surrounded by the glorious.  The plants and the creatures that we encounter every day are intricately designed living mechanisms.

Our senses keep us aware and in touch with our spectacular surroundings.  We continually see, hear, feel, taste, touch, understand, and interact with wondrous realities.

I once moved to Reno, Nevada and rented a room with a beautiful view of Mount Rose.  My first day I sat and looked out of my window for a long time, marveling at the mountain's grandeur.  For a couple of weeks I marveled every time I saw the view from my window.  However, gradually, I noticed the mountain less and less.  After a few months I hardly noticed that the snow capped mountain existed.  In the familiarity and routine of my life, I lost my marvels.

Humans have a capacity to experience awe -- an indefinable awareness of greatness, grandeur, and glory.  We can be deeply moved by natural beauty, by love, by compassion, by spiritual perception.  We can marvel at the wonders of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual existence.   However, if we are not careful, our capacity to marvel can be swept away in the rush of our daily life.  We can lose our marvels.

We can begin to think of our lives as common -- ordinary -- when nothing could be farther from the truth.  Every moment of our lives is unique -- every breath we breathe is a miraculous gift.

Too often we are bored with our bounty of beauty, unaware of our uniqueness, passive about our potential, burned out with our blessings, unmoved by our universe.  Perhaps we have lost our marvels.

I once read something like this:  "Life is not measured by the number of moments that we have to breathe, but by the moments that take our breath away."  What a glorious privilege we have to be alive today!

Why not marvel a bit today?
