Leeland: Love Is On The Move

Brothers Jack and Leeland Mooring, Mike Smith, and Jake Holtz are at it again. The members of the Christian rock group Leeland released their third CD recently, and all I can say is “Thanks, guys!”  I became aware of the band shortly after the hearing the single “Tears of the Saints” from their first release, Sound of Melodies.  I’ve been hooked ever since.

The retirement of the British band Delirious in 2009 could have left a large void in the Christian rock/worship genre. But Leeland, with a secondary nod to British group Bluetree, has filled the gap nicely. With “Love Is On The Move,” Leeland has solidified its unique voice and sound for a new generation of Christians.

Sound of Melodies introduced Leeland to the world in 2006, complete with lead singer Leeland Mooring’s passionate vocals and thoughtful lyrics. Several tunes from their debut CD (Yes You Have, Beautiful Lord, Carried to the Table) brought young worshipers around the world to the throne of God. The theme of caring for the “least of these” began to emerge as well. Opposite Way, their second CD released in 2008, gave us fun rockers such as “Count Me In” along with the worshipful tunes like “Enter This Temple.” That album, however, seemed to be a collection of songs that didn’t collectively hit on a certain themes like Sound of Melodies had.

With Love Is On The Move, Leeland has masterfully put the British rock sound, the soaring worship, and the heart of service the world to the glory of God all together in one package. Add to that a call to the church toward holiness and purity (“Pure Bride”), and you’ve got something very special. The CD has great rock tunes like “The Door” and “New Creation,” a fun song that reminds believers who we are in Christ and where our true home is. Godly worship is highlighted with “Lift Your Eyes Up,” “Holy Spirit, Have Your Way,” and “My Jesus.” Finally, Leeland leads the Church to go outside its walls and impact the world. This is where the songs get especially strong, as the lyrics and Leeland’s emotional vocal style converge to bring great passion to their message. “Follow You,” which features Brandon Heath on vocals along with Leeland, is a powerful example of this. It’s a song about joining along with God in His mission to reach hurting and broken people. The theme is continued with the rousing “Love Is On The Move” and “Learn to Love.”

There’s plenty in Love Is On The Move for all believers to enjoy. Beyond enjoyment, though, is inspiration. That’s what separates Leeland’s music from other Christian artists. I hope you are inspired to love God and serve him as much as I have been.
