The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Wednesday (Oct 14) criticized the Sri Lankan government for not responding “to our many requests for an international investigation of what we say is widespread acts of killing of civilians."
Speaking at a press conference in Brussels Wednesday evening, she said that “such a request has also been made by the (UN) Secretary General and we are working very closely with the Secretary General to hold the President of Sri Lanka to his promise which he made to the Secretary General that he will look into the issue of accountability and so we want to know what kind of mechanism is he setting up."
The UN human rights chief said, “we have pointed out that they have in the past attempted to hold national investigations of very serious acts of killings that occurred of NGO and humanitarian workers and these investigations were dropped."
“They do not have a very good record in holding serious investigations. Now, I am engaged in discussions with the Secretary General over what kind of mechanism would be acceptable. But as I said the bottom-line is that the government is resisting these suggestions," Pillay, a former South African high court judge, was quoted as saying by EuAsiaNews.
Asked if she was planning to visit Sri Lanka to discuss the human rights situation, Pillay told journalists that the Sri Lankan government has told the Secretary General and publicly that they would not let in the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

US 'deeply concerned' over Sri Lankan camps: envoy
The United States was "deeply concerned" that tens of thousands of displaced people were still locked inside camps two months after Sri Lanka's decades-long ethnic war had ended, a US envoy said Monday.
Around 300,000 people displaced during the final stages of the war continue to live in temporary shelters run by the state in the island's north and have only limited access to sanitation, food, medicine and clean water.
Though living conditions in the camps were improving, much more needed to be done, the visiting US assistant secretary of state for population, refugees and migration, Eric Schwartz, told reporters here.
"At the same time, the United States remains deeply concerned about a range of issues where further progress is essential. In particular, the vast majority of persons remain confined to camps," Schwartz said.
Please put pressure on Sri lankan govt. to release the Tamils from the interment camps.
Sri Lanka government is actively engaged in merely relocating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from one internment camp to other camps instead of resettling them in their own places.

Ethnic cleansing started in 1948 just after Sri Lanka got independence. First 1 million upcountry Tamils were disenfranchised. East and North were colonised with Sinhalese to alter the ethnic proportion in favour of the majority. 750,000 people made homeless by a futile war waged under the pretext of 'war on terror'. 300,000 civilians were kept in concentration camps with the blessing of UN Sec General and his staff. More than 50,000 were massacred and yet no independent probe of war crimes and human rights abuses. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights must urge the UN Human Rights Council to review the deteriorating human tragedy in the north of Sri Lanka and refer the case to ICC to probe the killings.
I ask the western world to visit Sri lanka and see the real truth what is happning in Sri lanka. Do not listen to gossip. Spreding all sourght of false information through media and human rights organisations and specially from UN. If you guys want to help SL Now is time..........

The International Criminal Law urgently urged UN human right chief and UN chief to investigate the genocidal crime against the innocent Tamil Civilians in Ceylon (they are not part of the war)and to prosecuted those criminals in the International Criminal Court.And also urged them to intervene in the matter of Internal Displaced Tamils (who are starving and dying the genocidal torture camps) and unlawful detention Tamils in the prisons and look after their immediately release without any excuse.The Law want the International justice please.
You shameless cow opened the filthy mouth again. SL is not perfect, but I bet the camps are far better than the slums in South Africa and all the people in the camps are fed by the govt. You do not send anybody to SL, what about other conflict zones including camps in Iraq, Pakistan, Bosnia and even USA.
Sri Lanka suceeded in undermining the UN and destroyed UN's credibility as true international organ that was built by best of the world leaders over these years. The UN Human Rights commission voting in Geneva was the last nail in the coffin of UN credibility. It was real shame on EU states and espcially on South Africa. UN need to win over the confidence of member states that UN Security Council is not willing to confine justice of International Criminal Court to just in Africa. Justice delayed Justice denied!
The real truth is that teh country has been badly misgoverned over decades after independence along lines of liguistices, race and religion with no-compromises or at best by getting away by cheating on promises and written agreements and even in violation of ite own Sinhala Buddhist doctored constitution! UN Security Council need an urgent review of its functions. Fro the last 4 years human rights violations have been going on unabated in Sri Lanka with impunity guaranteed to the abusers. Under the pretext of 'war on terror' one million Tamils and Muslims were chased from their houses in the East and North of Sri Lanka. In the process of chasing Tamils in Vanni more than 50,000 people were massacred, yet, UN SC refused to discuss the carnage. Why was the UN SC founded? Is it to protect tyrannical regimes or human rights of vulnerable people? The powerful and democratic countries like US, UK, Australia, France and Germany must strengthen the office of the UN Human Rights Commissioner, Mrs Navanitham Pillai.
SL is the worst country for the safety of journalists and dissapearances and 280k people are incarcerated , this the worst the humanity has seen after the 2nd world war.

Although UN knows that Sri Lanka committed a genocide under the cover of war against terrorism. However, UN is handicapped because Sri Lanka has backing of China, Russia and India.
The current plight of Tamils is essentially a result of the "ideological bankruptcy of the International Community" in not being able to find universal formulas for recognising righteous questions of liberation.

The Sri Lankan Government may well be continuing its human rights abuses with these arbitrary arrests." Nefarious Colombo for its move to weed out alleged ex LTTE cadres within the camps as “collectively punishing the non-combatant civilians who wish to return home”.
“International pressure is being stifled in the United Nations and elsewhere” China's opposition to censure Sri Lanka at the Security council during the height of the onslaught as evidence “that the machinery of the United Nations has been emasculated by China's veto as China considers recalcitrant Sri Lanka is in its sphere of influence” before slamming Beijing’s promotion of non-interference.
The only people who are NOT happy about elimination of terrorists in SL are the terrorists themselves who herded people all over North of Sri Lanka as human shield and kept them forceably, and thier funders and supporters. These people were expecting these people to die, so they could prove the non exisiting "genocide". If any civilians died in the war the FULL responsibility should be taken by the LTTE, its funders and supporters. First all the countries should investigate why Pillai is supporting terrorism and wantnt to do things the terrorists wants to do and make terrorists happy.
Some currupt officials like Naval Pillai is working on lTTE terrorists agenda which is seen as clear as crystal. Shouldn't there be an inquiry as to her actions in support of terrorists in SL be done before anything esle. She try very hard to save the lives of terrorists leaders and failed. She is a criminal who tried to save terrorists to terrorise SL and take away human rights of 20m people to live in peace.

It should be noted that these type of barbariens ruling in SL since 1947. We can never expect justice from any SL govt. The LTTE knew very well, by good means we will not get anything from any ruling SL Govt. Rajapakse's group sholud reasize that China, Iran and India will wash their hands one day and put you all behind the barbes wire very soon. So, if you are wise settle the matters in your country as early as possible. So, act soon before too late.
