The week of weird jewelry - part one

The time for featuring Etsy artisans is now. What better way to begin than by featuring jewelry. Not just any jewelry. I searched for the weirdest and oddest I could find. Why? So I could show the diversity Etsy brings to the cottage industry marketplace.

Okay, that is a blatant lie. I wanted to start my column off with a spectacular bang and this was at the top of the list of ways to do it. It is also my guilty pleasure. Honestly, I would wear a lot of this jewelry to social events. I’m sort of classy like that.

Let’s kick if off with Barbie displaying a little classic vernacular with the ‘Wise Women NO EVIL Statement Necklace’ from BeadCinematique. ‘I didn't want to just perpetuate the image of Barbie that most little girls have grown up with for decades, so I began to think: "What else can I do with her?" How can I recreate her and give ole silent, one-dimensional Barb a voice, a little character?

It’s clear that Sharon Johnson, owner of the Etsy shop is a bit of a character herself.

Why not display your personal anti-depression medication and you penchant for sweets at the same time?  The Cupcake of Simulated Happiness - Prozac Anti Depressant Cupcake Pendant made by monsterkookies is perfect for those who regularly take the drug. Or not. Whatever. ‘A friend and I were talking one day about the over-prescribing of anti-depressants. We discussed how the world was entirely depressed and that even though anti-depressants were over-prescribed that it's probably because the majority of us really ARE quite unhappy. We also joked about the fact that Bulk stores across the globe will eventually be selling anti-depressants in bulk like some sort of candy - and that's how this cupcake came to be.’ Says Kimberly Hart, owner of the shop.

You can find monsterkookies on Facebook and on her website and lying in her backyard watching clouds turn colors and eating the leaves from the trees because she's eaten too many of her own cupcakes.

Going further down the morbid track brings us to The Undertakers Toolbox Necklace.  Morgan Emerick of CLoVen explains ‘This particular necklace began with a wonderful find of amazing antique nails. I knew right away that they would make strange but beautiful jewelry components. My next thought was to pair one of these strong, rusty and squared nails with a chain that was delicate, light and feminine.’

And finally today, a piece from sweatheartsinner. ‘The idea for the Ultimate Crappy necklace came about as a joke. My partner (my husband) and I were discussing new possible designs and he wanted to put a piece of crap on a necklace to sell and call it the "ultimate crappy necklace". I didn't think anybody would buy it but so far he is the winner as it has sold over a dozen times.’

Find them on Twitter, Facebook or visit their website.  They can sometimes even be found sitting on some good ideas in the restroom.

Interesting statistics about sweatheartsinner. They are the #1 seller of handmade accessories on Etsy and the #11 overall seller of handmade goods on Etsy (Source: www.craftcount.com). They have over 2500 items for sale. Give them a glance. If you like different / weird stuff, you’re sure to find something you like.

Stay tuned. This was only part one of the 'Week of Weird'. I’ll be bringing you weird jewelry finds all week! Have something interesting you think should be featured? Contact me and let me know.
