A shock to foodies: Gourmet magazine is shutting down

Ruth Reichl, editor of Gourmet magazine.

Foodies around the world brace yourselves for the blow you are about to receive: Gourmet magazine is closing.

After 68 years of being a leader and innovator in the market of food magazines, Gourmet will publish its last issue in November, according to today’s New York Times online edition.

The NY Times also reported that Condé Nast, the publishing house behind Gourmet and a host of other publications, will also seize operations of three other magazines: Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride.

The closings come on the heels of a three-month study  which analyzed Condé Nast's expenses. The study recommended that some magazines cut their spending by 25 percent, according to the NY Times.

News of a drop in advertising revenue made headlines earlier this year but no one could really foresee the closing of Gourmet.

Many are now left wondering what Ruch Reichl, Gourmet’s editor and highly respected figure in the food world, will do next.

A sad day in the food world

Shocked and sad, food writers and bloggers are taking the internet by storm with their thoughts.

Brett Anderson of Nola.com, and freelance contributor of Gourmet, wrote:
“I still don’t believe it… What I loved about Gourmet is that it used its wide reach to publish more than just useful recipes and amazing photography.”

Pigtown Design, a Baltimore-based blog posted the following:
“I love reading recipes and looking at all of the gorgeous pictures and I have always found great insider tips on places to visit when I am traveling. Such a shame for everyone involved in Gourmet.”

Sausca, a NY Times reader put it best with these words:
"The end of life as we know it. We have had a subscription to Gourmet since May, 1975. There have been ups and downs, but it is clearly the gold standard of food magazines."
