Chocolate-covered ants recipe

Thought this would make a fun entry for "Weird Wednesday" when I will bring you strange and bizarre recipes from around the globe!

Chocolate Covered Ants
(or other crunchy protein critters)
Recipe By - Chef Jacques Martine
Yield – 12 Chocolates
Ingredients –
100 Live Black Ants (avoid red ants, they're too spicy)
1 vanilla bean split and seeds scraped out
2 Egg Yolks
1 Tbsp. Sugar
1 tsp. Butter, melted
12 oz. Bittersweet Chocolate

Procedures -
Using a medium size pot as a double boiler, heat two cups of water and place a bowl over it. Add chocolate and turn heat to low, heat until chocolate is melted. In another mixing bowl, add vanilla seeds and egg yolks, beat until smooth, add sugar and butter. Fold in ants carefully. Take care not to smash them. They stay more flavorful and retain extra moisture if intact.

I found this recipe while cruising the internet at a site called chefdepot.net, a site for gourmets and chefs. Unfortunately, no photo of the dish was supplied. Just hope that the insect-protection arm of PETA doesn't complain.

where does one find ants to cook with? There's an ant hill on my sidewalk, but it seems like a lot of work to capture that many critters!

I think you're right. I know primitive people eat insects, and I have actually tried chocolate-covered ants bought in a can, but I've never actually cooked them myself. Still, if you're lost in the woods with a bar of chocolate, here's a way to add protein to your diet!

It be interesting to know whether one folded them in live or...inert, as it were.

I love your creative recipe though I hope I have chocolate covered raisins in my backpack if I get lost. Still, it's nice to know I can munch on some ants if I get reallllyyyy hungry.
