Celebrate Christmas Eve with the horses

If you’ve finished your shopping and are looking for something special to do on Christmas Eve, why not take a drive out to the Blue Star Equiculture draft horse sanctuary at the 129-acre Burgundy Brook Farm in Palmer, MA to participate in their annual holiday tradition of feeding a feast to the more than 30 equine citizens who call the farm home on the day before Christmas.

Horses will be called to munch on their Christmas Eve “dinner” around 1:00pm on Saturday, December 24th.  Members of the public are invited to come to observe, to take pictures, to pet the horses, and to bring offerings of apples and carrots.  Even if you can’t actually be there when the horses are enjoying their supper, you’re welcome to drop off food donations prior to the event.

Blue Star Equiculture provides a sanctuary to retired working horses, and offers homeless working horses a safe place where their needs will be met, while also providing them with the opportunity to be useful and to engage with the community to bring education, awareness and healing.  The nonprofit organization’s focus is the well-being of the draft horse, who it regards as a national and much under-appreciated treasure.  Among the residents at the farm are several former carriage horses, including Bud, Carter, and Rosie.
