Hands-on grooming
If you have a pony-mad child and have run out of inspiration for his or her birthday bash, take a look at these two possibilities.
Potomac Horse Center 14211 Quince Orchard Road, North Potomac, MD 20878-3304
Two time slots are available on Saturdays and Sundays: 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. A private party room is provided, equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, tables, seating and rest room. You provide the food and decorations.
The party includes: a stable tour, during which the guests meet the horses and participate in a fun discussion on colors, markings, breeds and horsey facts.
In good weather the children go on a tractor drawn hayride. In bad weather hands-on grooming is substituted.
After that the party-goers search for candies in the center’s hayroom for about thirty minutes.
Now comes the good bit: the children get to ride on 2 ponies provided for up to 10 children, and 3 ponies for parties over that number. For the last 30 minutes the birthday celebration continues in the party room.
The cost is $329.99 plus 10% entertainment tax for up to 10 children and $19.99 plus tax for each additional child.

An experience your child won't ever forget
Calleva Outdoor Adventures 13015 Riley’s Lock Road, Poolesville, MD 20837
Available from 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays from March through November. If your group includes guests who are not strictly pony-crazy, this event can either be combined with the climbing wall or party-goers can do an un-mounted craft activity while not on horse-back.
There is a fifteen minute safety talk, with helmet-fitting and pairing up with the horses. The remaining time is split between riding and participating in an off-horse activity.
Again, no food or favors are provided: parents are welcome to arrive early and set up decorations, etc.
Cost is $40 per child with a 10 children minimum ($70 if combined with climbing wall).
Either of these venues will provide a party your child won’t ever forget.
