On May 23, 2010 supporters of The Leukemia and Lymphona Society as well as those passionate about the latest dance craze, Zumba, were boogying down at Bet U Can Dance (BUCD) in Northport, LI, NY. All the BUCD Zumba teachers were out in force donating their time and energy for a good cause. All the proceeds for the 1 ½ hour Zumba class went right to the Society to help those facing this life-threatening disease.
BUCD owner Jeff Sherman is a big supporter of causes. In addition to the Leukemia Society his dance studio has held fundraisers for numerous other causes.

The fundraiser was inspired by BUCD Zumba dance instructor Erica Lucks who rallied the rest of the instructors together for this worthy cause. Struttin’ there stuff were BUCD Zumba instructors Fran Ferriso, Ed Velazquez, Elysa Krukowski, Melina Rosado Arnberg, JoAnne Rossiter, Katia Jackson and Susan Rubin. Jeff is also a certified Zumba instructor.
Erica is not new to the suffering involved with these diseases since her mom is a lymphoma survivor. She approached Jeff and the other instructors who were only too happy to take part. The turnout for the event was not only an indication of the kindheartedness
of those who
dance but their passion for Zumba, a dance that combines Latin and International music into a power packed dynamic and effective fitness system. BUCD is now considered the fitness center on Long Island where you can find more Zumba classes than at any other studio.
Among those jiving to the music was Linda Shapiro, a Zumba instructor in Florida where she spends most of her winter. Shapiro is in her 60s and yet was clearly keeping up with the best of them.
“I love it. It is the most fun you can have while exercising,” she commented, still puffing a little from the intense
workout. “It doesn’t matter
what you are doing, just keep moving,” she encouraged.
Linda explained that when Zumba first came out it was very much focused around Latin music but now Hip Hop and other dance moves have been incorporated into this unique dance fitness program.
Zumba has also been known to be a great form of dieting. Linda can vouch for that. When she first started she immediately lost 7 pounds.
Zumba instructor Rossiter is another slimming example. She recently had her first child and has trimmed off every bit of those extra pounds she gained while pregnant.
“
In a really intense workout and you can burn as many as 1000
calories,” commented Linda.
“Four years ago you could barely find a Zumba class,” continued Linda and now at BUCD there are often 25 classes held each week.
