Equestrian and Queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips engaged to British footballer

The new year could be momentous for royal watchers, with two weddings on the way in 2011.  Buckingham Palace announced the December 21st engagement of the Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips to British rugby player Mike Tindall.

Avid equestrian Zara Anne Elizabeth Phillips is the daughter of Princess Anne, Princess Royal, and Captain Mark Phillips. The 29-year-old blonde is also the granddaughter of British Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. As such, Zara is noted as 12th in the royal line of succession.

Zara Phillips is a popular equestrian jumping competitor, having won several titles in Europe. In 2006, she was recognized as BBC Sports Personality of the Year. She is also a patron of the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund.

The royal engagement comes after a seven-year courtship between Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall, who plays rugby for Gloucester and England. The couple resides in Gloucestershire.

Zara Phillips and her sportsman fiancé have yet to announce the date of their upcoming nuptuals. Of course, 2011 will hold another royal wedding – with Prince William and Kate Middleton set to tie the knot on April 29th.
