Chief Environmental Officer Sadhu Johnston announced last week that he is leaving Chicago for the role of Deputy City Manager of Vancouver.
Considered a prodigy by many, the 35-year-old is leaving just two years after Mayor Daley specifically created the position of Chief Environmental Officer for him.
Johnston was put in charge of Daley’s ultimate goal to make Chicago the greenest city in the nation. The development of green job programs, implementation of sustainable energy standards in buildings and green roof grants are among Johnston’s contributions to this objective.
Johnston, who is a dual citizen of both the U.S. and Canada, was hand-picked by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.
And his departure won’t be drastically different for Johnston; Robertson’s environmental enthusiasm matches Daley’s and both share similar ambitions in Gregor’s desire to make Vancouver the front-runner in clean energy in North America.
Johnston’s last day is set for September 30. As of now Mayor Daley is unsure as to whether he will select a replacement for Johnston or eliminate the position all together.
