A global day of action with international demonstrations on climate change will be held on Saturday December 12th 2009 at the time of the United Nations talks on climate change (COP15) in Copenhagen Denmark.

The Council of Canadians is one of the groups coordinating activities across Canada including candle light vigils. "Around the world people will gather at strategic locations in their communities, and will light candles of hope to stand in solidarity with the citizens of the nations whose survival is threatened by the climate crisis."

In Delta/Richmond BC on Saturday, December 12  a  Candlelight Vigil will be held at Westham Square (in front of Johnny's Store at the corner of Elliott Street and Ladner Trunk Road) in Ladner BC between 5:30 and 6 p.m.

Candlelight vigils are also being held at locations right across Canada with exact details and locations on the Council of Canadians website. Cities including Victoria, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Peterborough and Charlottetown will be holding vigils. These actions are also being endorsed by 350.org which is encouraging all participants to symbolically include the number 350 in their climate change activities (stands for 350 parts per million which leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere).

The Council of Canadians also reports that they will be on the ground in Copenhagen, providing updates on negotiations inside the conference and taking part in numerous events and climate justice movement activities happening outside. Other activities will also be organized right across the globe to tie-in with the UN climate change conference.

The Council of Canadians also highlights a video on its website, called Cap & Trade, which takes a critical informative look at one of the climate change solutions being proposed by business and financial leaders in the form of carbon trading, a carbon stock market and carbon offsets – and why it is a bad idea.
